Remember the little boy's backpack?

The tutorial can be found at Noodlehead and my version is blogged at OURILAN. If anyone makes this little toddler backpack, it isn't a toy and the child shouldn't run around with it on unsupervised. We take it downtown with Ilan's toy cars and a snack.

July 1rst Mountain Market

I just wanted to remind everyone that we are having a table at the Mountain Market at the Canada Day celebration July 1rst. If anyone would like to put in items for sale we will take turns manning the table. I will be enormously pregnant but will be there with my slowly growing stash! J.P has been the busiest of us all making a variety of felted and sewn items. Come join as Wednesday nights at 7pm to find out more!!

I love Noodleheads!!!

I love when I come across some great ideas for sewing for little boys. Check out this really neat tutorial for a little boys back pack http://noodleheads.blogspot.com/2010/02/boys-drawstring-backpack-from-khaki.html.

Ok. I need to start somewhere.....

It has been too long since a post!!! It isn't because of our lack of creating down at Creative Minds. Yes, our Wednesday nights, although there is a lot of chit chat, are still going! Although our crowd has thinned out a bit there is still lots of crocheting, sewing, and felting going on. A few of us are making items for a table at the Mountain Market for Fernie's Canada Celebration. If any Art Station/Creative Mind is interested in making items, come share a table with us! If you haven't been in awhile to the Wednesday night chat and craft, no worries, come on down and we will fill you in!

Craft Night March 3, 2010

It was good to get back to craft night. I missed the week before due to "stuck on the couch syndrome". RM called me a good Canadian for staying home to watch hockey. Little did she know. I did occasionally get off the couch to attempt my hand at machine quilting. That is another story and I now know that my machine doesn't really "machine quilt" the way I dream of. Oh well. Speaking of new machines, JP congrats on your beautiful new sew machine. What a great gift for you! You did a fantastic job with the jumper for A. It was good to see everyone turn out and bring projects from last week. Here are a few samples of what we worked on.

One of Our Own....

Make sure you all visit Justfeltcreative.blogspot.com by our very own JP! I knew she was pretty addicted to felting but now we have proof! I especially love her felt craft books and intricate trees. I have this lingering idea of making some felt hanging mobiles....I think I may need some felt schooling from JP. Look for more posts with felt mobile examples to inspire us all!

Something other than fabric and yarn....

Although I mostly obsess about fabric I love looking at pretty paper. I don't do anything with it save feeble attempts at card making. I love this idea  from Rosalindgrace Designs where she took a wooden letter and covered it with paper. So simple and such a nice idea for a child's gift or decorating a nursery. I am thinking C-H-L-O-E (a not so subtle hint that this is my favourite name for our next girl child). I have seen painted wooden letters downtown but what a neat idea to do ourselves!

Thanks for the Inspiration, AP

Last night AP asked me if I knew where to buy waterproof fabric for making snack bags. I have been noticing more tutorials on making little reusable treat bags and I think it is a wonderful concept! Occasionally I will wash and reuse zip lock bags but I love the idea of making our own fabric ones. There are a few options with making them in terms of fabric. There are some really neat prints for laminated cotton that make great drop cloths (for under a high chair), bibs or lunch sacks. Here are some examples below. To find laminated cotton just google "laminated cotton" and you will come up with lots of options.

Some tutorials I have found don't even use laminated cotton but instead use lightweight cotton and Osnaburg fabric for the lining. I had to look the latter up. It is a mid to heavy weight unbleached, natural cotton used in bags and slip covers for example. I have actually found heavy weight unbleached cotton at quilt shops that is really nice and soft that would work as well. I think the theory behind using cotton is that it is a natural fibre safe to be next to your food. I would almost be tempted to use laminated for the outside and natural cotton for the inside if I went the laminated route.

You can find the tutorial for this snack bag HERE.

What We Have Been Working on For the Last Few Weeks.

We have felters, crocheters, knitters, sewists! We are doing it all! Thank you so much everyone for the awsome turnout this past Wednesday! It was super fun! I think our pictures of work in progress will say more than I can say...again it was a great time as usual!

K. Something Non Kid Related for Mamas.

I was blog surfing and found a great tutorial to make funky liners for the rubber boots (as we call them here. Or some of us.) that I don't have. I must get a pair just so I can make these!!!!!

Anyone for Softies??

Last craft night we talked about having a "Softies Night". I have lots of fabric bits we can swap or extra for those who need some. Bring anything you may like to use and I will bring the pattern book and some tracing paper, plus extra fabric.  Next week can be simply planning and organizing to make one or if the urge comes over you, whip one up. I will bring my machine. If anyone wants to bring another one for two on the go, that would be great! Here is one I made for Ilan. When ever we go to Heaven Stitch and Design he heads straight for a little crocheted owl and he says..."hoo hoo!". He can also say "moo" too. Pretty cute.

Craft Night on Jan 27th was all about the felting.

So addicting!!! What fun for a sewist who's only experience with felting was the accidental kind to a favourite wool sweater. JP was so kind to share her knowledge in wet felting and the three of us had a fantastic time whipping up some bowls. With Easter a few months away I may save mine and put a handle on it for an egg hunt basket. I loved the rough texture of MF's roving. It created a mohair effect on her bowl that got fuzzier as it dried. JP's bowl had great color and she is awsome at swirling the colors together. Very nice work girls!

Craft Night January 13th, 2010

It was sooo good to catch up with you crafty women! We had some funny mom, barfy, pukey stories. Updates on felitng workshops in the Fernie area and most of all good fun! I forgot my camera AGAIN!!! My husband even reminded me. Then, I forgot to use JP's camera to get pics of all our lovely peices. SO!!! not the next craft night but the one after...January 28th, please everyone bring items you have worked on and I will work on a gallery for us. I even think I can manage to figure out a flicker slide show for us Fernie Creative Minds. I will give a reminder for the 28th closer to the day. JP is not at the next craft night but I will make sure to be there and open the doors. Have a lovely week! Watch for lots of Posts, I am on a roll!!! AK.

Wonderful Knits!!!! Oh My! I need to Learn!

Ok. I have been thinking about it. Really thinking about learning to knit. I think at heart I will always be a sewer but I think I can convert for a little while....first I will have to learn the basics and get over my complete inability to read patterns of any sort. Check out some beautiful knitting and patterns at Magpie Patterns. There are also great patterns for sewing, embroidery and crochet.

JCasa Handmade Tutorial

I just came across this tutorial to make a child's coloring wallet. Now that Ilan is old enough to manipulate crayons, I carry ours around in a ziplock bag. This is the perfect solution! The only thing I think I would change is to put a velcro flap over the crayons to keep them from falling out.

What went down.....

Again we had a few new people last night! WElcome M.F. and J.L! We missed you little R.P. Next time! I forgot to bring my camera to give you all a sampling of what went down so I thought instead I would compile a few tutorials related to what everyone worked on. M.F, your knitting skills are fabulous and all evening I couldn't wait to research different ideas for hot water bottle cozies. One is found here and here and here.

January 6th, 2010 Craft Night

Come on down to the first 2010 session at the Arts Station. I have been mulling over my plan of attack. Bring clunky sewing machine that I have to coach along, pleading and cajoling the whole way....a stack of nice fat quarters and a plan to make a quick simple tie quilt. K. my second plan. Finish a skirt. I will decide on the fly after wolfing down supper and saying goodnight to Ilan. See you guys there!!!!
